Association News: NAFS User Guide provides easy to follow steps for proper application of the North American Fenestration Standard

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) released today a User Guide to the 2011 AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights (NAFS). The result of a multi-year effort by the three associations, the NAFS User Guide has received final approval and is now available publicly.

The user guide was developed as a non-mandatory, advisory document and is published as a public service. Intended users of NAFS include code officials, manufacturers, architects, engineers, consumers, builders, contractors, trade associations, testing laboratories, specifiers and government agencies. Intended to provide those users with guidance for the proper application of NAFS, the user guide contains informative commentary, illustrations and examples to help answer common questions associated with the standard.

“The NAFS User Guide is the latest product of the ongoing effort to harmonize fenestration standards in North America. This effort started nearly 20 years ago and is evidence of the fenestration industry’s desire to offer our customers a single, unified performance specification across borders. As someone who is a strong advocate for industry collaboration, I am very appreciative of the efforts, diligence and cooperation from all three associations. Everyone involved has worked hard to reach this point and remains committed to continued improvement in future editions,” states Joe Hayden, senior project engineer for Pella Windows and Doors, who served as WDMA’s Joint Document Management Group (JDMG) co-chair.

The 2011 version of NAFS is already referenced in the 2012 editions of the International Building Code and International Residential Code, and the new standard is being proposed to replace the 2008 edition in the 2015 edition of the National Building Code of Canada.

The JDMG, comprised of representatives appointed by all three associations, stresses the importance of NAFS-11. “The NAFS User Guide was created to give manufacturers, testing laboratories and product designers greater insight into the requirements of NAFS, what they mean and how they were generated. Placing this information in a user guide helps the marketplace compare and specify the best products,” says Ray Garries, corporate manager of external affairs for JELD-WEN Inc., who served as AAMA’s JDMG co-chair. The User Guide also incorporates appropriate reference material from outside sources.

The NAFS User Guide is structured to parallel the standard itself, with section numbers identical to those in the main standard, allowing users to quickly find the User Guide commentary and the corresponding section in the standard.

“The user guide represents yet another significant step toward achieving seamless trade across the U.S./Canadian border for fenestration industry manufacturers. Canada has had a user guide to the Canadian fenestration standard for a number of years,” says Greg Hildebrand, head of the façade engineering group at exp Services Inc., who served as CSA’s JDMG co-chair. Hildebrand further notes, “The NAFS User Guide puts all of the reference and explanatory information into one place and will simplify the content for the next (2017) edition of NAFS.”

Client News: Chicago’s Audi dealership showcases Tubelite’s curtainwall

* Tubelite will be exhibiting at the AIA Expo in booth #4634 *

Audi Hoffman Estates dealership in Illinois showcases Tubelite’s 400 Series curtainwall and reflects the efficiency, performance, luxury and environmental themes of its vehicles. The new $9 million, 47,000-square-foot facility is one of the first in the Midwest to feature a square, metal-clad “terminal” prototype design by Munich-based Allmann Sattler Wappner Architekten.

Tubelite_IL_Audi_Front-ExtIn 1990, Audi Hoffman Estates became the first exclusive, stand-alone Audi dealership in the United States. In 2013, it also became one of the first new dealerships in the U.S. to use Allmann Sattler Wappner’s design. The Dobbins Group’s Chicago-based architectural team helped the Illinois dealership bring this prototype from concept to reality.

Celebrating Audi’s “Vorsprung durch Technik,” “Progress through Technology,” the dealership’s prototype reflects a corporate philosophy that “reminds us to challenge ourselves, rewrite the rules from time to time and always fuel our pioneering spirit.”

The terminal design gives the Audi a new identity throughout the world. It also increases dealers’ space to accommodate the growing range of cars, as well as the company’s market presence in international cities. These heterogeneous locations demand an architectural language with both a single consistent typology and a distinctive design. Developed as a modular system, the facility’s structural and spatial concept is flexible and scalable.

“It’s a very unique look,” observed Brian Hall, Audi Hoffman Estates’ general manager. “Audi is very demanding on all of their products and the way they’re installed, so it was not easy.”

Well-suited to the precise design, scale and metallic aesthetic of Audi’s dealership, Tubelite’s 400 Series curtainwall is engineered for low- and mid-rise applications. For Audi Hoffman Estates, Leopardo Companies served as the project’s general contractor. Glazing contractor Northern Glass Inc. specified and installed the curtainwall system on time and within budget.

“First, Tubelite came in under my original design budget. What’s more, they were able to produce materials in a very timely manner,” said Eric Martinson, project manager and estimator with Northern Glass Inc. “Thanks to the Tubelite team, the entire process was a pleasant experience.”

The curtainwall features offers 2.5-inch sightlines and the strength of 8-inch-deep backmembers with an overall 10-inch system depth. Every other vertical was butt-glazed. Low-E insulating glass reduces solar heat gain in the summer and heat loss in winter – important in the Chicago climate. An exterior screw-applied pressure bar secures the glass.

The durable framework of the curtainwall provides exceptional structural performance, reducing the need for steel reinforcing. “Tubelite helped engineer the curtainwall, letting us know what size steel reinforcement was needed,” noted Martinson. “They also helped with some very difficult bends, located in the opposite top and bottom corners, and delivered all stock length material in a couple of weeks.”

The aluminum used to produce this curtainwall can be extruded by Tubelite using EcoLuminum™, a high recycled-content aluminum billet composition with eco-friendly finishes. Enhancing the project’s environmental attributes, longevity and metallic appearance, the aluminum framing was finished by Linetec using clear anodize, which contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Because anodize is an integral part of the substrate, the coating delivers excellent wear and abrasion resistance with minimal maintenance. Anodize process by-products are recyclable and anodized aluminum is 100 percent recyclable.

“It’s got a lot of metal on the exterior for a very specific look,” added Audi Hoffman Estates’ Hall. “Everyone seems to love it. …and as for customers, they are all very impressed.”

Client News: Linetec mimics terra cotta’s look and feel in new painted finish

* Visit Linetec in AIA Expo booth #4634 *

Linetec introduces a new paint finish to mimic the look and feel of natural terra cotta. The finish utilizes a 70% PVDF resin-based coating to achieve the highest levels of performance in an exterior environment and a texture additive to help replicate the natural feel of terra cotta.2Linetec_TerraCotta

“There is no doubt terra cotta wall panels have made a significant splash in the building façade market,” says Jon Close, Linetec’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Terra cotta offers a unique and attractive element to any building envelope. While this new finish cannot replicate all of the properties and design elements of terra cotta, we can offer a paint finish on wall panels that looks and feels like the real thing. And, we can do it at a cost that may better fit projects where terra cotta is desired, but cannot be afforded.”

In addition to affordability, Close also notes that aluminum wall panels painted with the terra cotta finish are lighter, can come in a large variety of shapes and sizes, and can be delivered in a shorter time frame. Furthermore, Linetec’s new paint is available in four color choices of terra cotta.

As a 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin-based coating, Linetec’s terra cotta painted finish meets the requirements of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association’s most stringent, high-performance specification standard, AAMA 2605-13. These architectural finishes are tested to exhibit outstanding resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals.

As an environmentally responsible finisher, Linetec safely captures and destroys the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in liquid paints at the factory before arrival on the building site. These industry-leading practices complement other green building choices, such as using recycled aluminum content, and ensure a long-lasting, durable and sustainable finish.
