Client News: Wausau’s interior S.E.A.L. windows simplify upgrades for sound, energy, air and light

Wausau will be exhibiting at Greenbuild in booth #2820

Wausau Window and Wall Systems® “Sound, Energy, Air and Light” S.E.A.L.™ Series upgrades the acoustical and thermal performance of facilities’ existing window systems. Part of the Advantage by Wausau® offering, these standard interior accessory windows (IAWs) are ideally suited to meet the accelerated pace of construction timelines for low- and mid-rise buildings including offices, schools and medical facilities. Competitively priced, they are backed with an industry-leading warranty of up to 10 years.

Leaving the exterior window or curtainwall framing systems intact, Wausau’s S.E.A.L. Series IAWs can contribute to improved energy efficiency and other demanding performance needs. For facilities in high traffic areas near highways, railways or airports, S.E.A.L. windows also are an excellent choice for reducing sound transmittance. These benefits, along with daylight and outside views, are recognized by the LEED® Green Building Rating Systems.

“The addition of interior windows is easily justified for those applications where the existing windows still resist water penetration, but are drafty and inefficient relative to thermal performance,” says Wausau’s health care market manager, Lisa May, LEED Green Associate. “In historically significant buildings, existing windows are often restored, and IAWs used to upgrade performance without changing the exterior appearance of the building envelope.”

She explains, “Condensation resistance and thermal transmittance (U-Factor) of existing single-glazed windows are significantly improved with the addition of Wausau’s S.E.A.L interior windows. Air infiltration is also reduced.”

Wausau’s hinged or lift-out S.E.A.L. Series windows are available with narrow frame depths, to fit within existing window wells, and usually are provided with custodial locks for access to between-glass spaces. They also provide a convenient opportunity to incorporate between-glass blinds. For exterior window systems, blinds allow occupants to control natural light and glare. For interior window systems, blinds offer privacy for sensitive environments.

When used as interior windows, Wausau’s dual-glazed 2500 Series S.E.A.L. observation windows are recommended for intensive care units. In psychiatric applications, 2187-DT Series units accept security glazing and are “drop tested” for interior human impacts up to 2,000 foot-pounds.

The durable, aluminum frames contain recycled content averaging 70% or greater, enhancing the S.E.A.L. windows’ environmental attributes. The aluminum can be finished in nearly any color. With a palette exceeding 30,000 color choices, painted finishes may be requested as liquid or powder coatings with ultra-low volatile organic compounds (VOC) and VOC-free content. Durable, VOC-free anodize finishes also may be selected.
