Client News: Kolbe expands VistaLuxe Collection with 90-degree corner direct set window

* Kolbe is exhibiting at AIA Expo in booth #4441 *

1Kolbe_VistaLuxe90degree_IntKolbe continues to expand its VistaLuxe® Collection with the introduction of a new 90-degree corner direct set window unit, which will be unveiled during the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Expo and Convention 2014. Collaboratively developed with architects, the VistaLuxe Collection’s contemporary designs utilize multiple units to create large expanses of glass. Minimal frames and sash optimize daylight openings and maximize viewing areas, while maintaining energy efficiency.

“The VistaLuxe Collection made its debut at AIA 2013 and we have continued to build on this success,” said Cindy Bremer, Kolbe’s vice president of marketing. Kolbe’s VistaLuxe Collection includes casements, awnings, direct set windows, inswing and outswing doors and matching transoms, geometric shapes, a complementary multi-slide door, and now, a new 90-degree corner window unit.

“We are seeing an increased demand for 90-degree units as homeowners seek to open up their homes with corner views that seem to transcend structural boundaries and extend their connection with the surrounding landscape,” Bremer continues. “These products give architects and design-savvy homeowners the flexibility to combine units into unique, compatible configurations, while maintaining symmetry and sightlines. Clean, fluid lines are delivered by the narrowest of frames.”1Kolbe_VistaLuxe90degree_Ext

The VistaLuxe Collection products showcase a warm, wood interior with a selection that includes sustainably harvested species. The extruded aluminum clad exteriors may be painted in standard, custom and new mica colors, and all are backed with a 30-year finish warranty. Durable anodize finishes also are available in metallic tones.

A choice of Flush, Accent and Accent Plus style profiles are offered in the VistaLuxe Collection. The frame nosing, sash face, glass and stops always remain in the same plane across product types within a style choice. A range of glass choices assists in addressing different climate zones and performance needs.

The VistaLuxe Collection model on exhibit at the AIA Expo in booth #4441 features a 90-degree direct set corner unit with a post presented in a Flush style exterior painted in the new Cashmere Pearl mica finish. On the interior, the Alder wood species is enhanced with Coffee Bean stain. This display also highlights matching product selections from the VistaLuxe Collection: an outswing door on one side, and a casement and awning unit on the other. Each is paired with Satin Nickel hardware and a 3-5/8-inch jamb. All of the units are shown using LoE2-270 glass with a black glass spacer.

Design teams can easily communicate and visually customize dimensions and functionality for the VistaLuxe Collection’s products using Kolbe’s 3-D Revit® building information models (BIM). In addition to BIM tools, the website offers 2-D drawings; air, water, structural and thermal reports; warranties, installation and maintenance information, and online videos to demonstrate product operation and performance testing.

Client News: Wausau presents Custom Window by Wausau historically accurate windows and terrace door inserts

Wausau Window and Wall Systems® showcases its product line of historically accurate windows during the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Expo and Convention 2104. The Custom Window™ by Wausau product family includes historic windows, swinging terrace door inserts and accessories to achieve modern performance, while preserving the look of landmark buildings.
3Wausau_CWbyW_MI_WyandotteHS
For more than 30 years, universities, courthouses, museums, libraries, hotels, schools, high-rise residences and other commercial buildings have relied on these products to meet both renovation and new construction applications. Custom Window by Wausau products may be selected as fixed and project-in or project-out casements; self-balancing double-hung windows; fixed and projected, simulated double-hung windows; hopper vents and historic glazing inserts for swinging terrace doors. Available on an accelerated delivery schedule, these competitively priced windows and doors are backed with an industry-leading warranty of up to 10 years.

“Historically accurate preservation demands more than just a nod to the architectural vernacular,” emphasizes Dave Stevens, Custom Window by Wausau’s product manager. “Respectful restoration calls for replication of character-defining features. Narrow, accurate sightlines; true divided lites; and strict attention to detail set apart the fenestration of landmark structures — then, and now.”3Wausau_CWbyW_IL_RockIslandArsenal

Custom Window by Wausau products can replicate nearly any historic sightline in a true divided lite (TDL) window. Stevens adds, “Glassmaking technology in the years prior to World War II limited the size of individual glass lites, mitigating the use of putty-glazed muntin grids. Only TDL design can reproduce this aesthetic with the fidelity required for rigorous historical preservation.”

Wausau’s project teams work with architects, building teams and presiding historic districts to assist in obtaining necessary aesthetic and performance approvals, associated tax credits and long-term objectives. Extra-wide thermal barriers also can contribute to building’s energy saving goals and condensation resistance.

Stevens notes, “Replication is about the entire opening, not just the window. The product must be easy to install and anchor correctly. Appropriate sills and trim must be provided to complete the window and blend it seamlessly with the opening and the building itself. If a window doesn’t do all these things, it’s simply not good enough.”

PrintCustom profiles can be designed for panning, perimeter framing or muntins, including panning systems with “T” mullions to echo existing profiles. These aluminum components may be specified with up to 70 percent recycled content and finished with liquid paint, powder coatings or anodize. Dual-color finishing can be accommodated to match different interior and exterior color schemes. With a palette exceeding 30,000 color choices, painted finishes may be requested with ultra-low volatile organic compounds (VOC) and VOC-free content. Durable, VOC-free anodize finishes also may be selected, such as a patina-free copper.

Client News: Kodet Architectural Group wins AIA Minneapolis 2014 Merit Award for MnDOT Maple Grove Maintenance and Truck Station

Kodet Architectural Group, Ltd.’s design of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Maple Grove Maintenance and Truck Station has earned a 2014 Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects’ Minneapolis chapter (AIA Minneapolis). Kodet Architectural Group, a Minneapolis-based full-service architectural firm, was honored at a luncheon celebration on June 19. During the presentation, jurors shared their thoughts from their visit to this new facility and the insights gathered from the government agency leaders involved in its successful development.Kodet_MN-DOT-MapleGrove_96_web

AIA Minneapolis Merit Awards encompass the views of business professionals, real estate developers, community advocates, and academic leaders, as well as architects. In the words of the owner: “With this building design, MnDOT will be able to provide better customer service through enhanced equipment availability for road maintenance and by prolonging the life of taxpayer-supported equipment.”

AIA Minneapolis Merit Awards tell a story of excellence beyond design, reflecting the variety of forces that shape a building – from the client/team satisfaction to technical innovation and environmental responsibility, from budget/business success to community impact. For MnDot Maple Grove Maintenance and Truck Station, the jurors’ comments included such descriptions as “the garages are beautiful,” “balance of interior and exterior” and “six percent below budget and on time.”

Kodet_MN-DOT-MapleGrove_01_webCompleted in August 2013, MnDOT Maple Grove Maintenance and Truck Station was estimated at $13.8 million and bids totaled at $12.9 million. “This project makes a unique design statement out of an ordinary utilitarian building type, using simple economical materials, such as precast concrete, metal panels and painted steel,” said Ed Kodet, Jr., FAIA, president of Kodet Architectural Group.

Encompassing 108,000 square feet, this new facility combines the functions of the Golden Valley and Maple Grove Maintenance Facilities into one building. It functions as a hub for MnDOT, providing 34 vehicle maintenance stalls, four large welding bays, as well as space for 27 vehicles in heated storage. The Field Supply Inventory Center is the building’s core, providing access to both vehicle maintenance and storage, and servicing other MnDOT facilities with a loading dock for vendors’ access.

Kodet_MN-DOT-MapleGrove_30_web“Combining the station operations and mechanics facility in one location centralizes these functions and reduces maintenance and operations costs for the Metro District,” according to MnDOT. “The main building layout is more efficient for MnDOT staff’s use and provides a safer and healthier work environment due to design of HVAC, lighting and materials distribution systems.” These systems were developed working closely with local utilities to achieve energy rebates, incorporating occupancy and daylight sensors and high efficiency.

Kodet Architectural Group’s design followed the Minnesota Sustainable Building Guidelines (MSBG), incorporating materials that are locally available and recycled. Sustainable concepts implemented include a geothermal system with wells on site, and clerestory windows and skylights in vehicle maintenance to provide daylight. Computer modeling was used to optimize the openings’ locations. Kodet also used computer 3-D modeling for renderings and cost estimate takeoffs.

Kodet_MN-DOT-MapleGrove_02_web“The design was a successful collaborative effort between the design team, Metro District staff and MnDOT Building Services staff, which worked closely through the programming, design and construction phases,” praised MnDOT. “This project is a tremendous addition to MnDOT’s facilities and will support metro operations for many decades into the future.”

MnDOT Maple Grove Maintenance and Truck Station is one of four projects are recognized as 2014 AIA Minneapolis Merit Award Winners. Kodet Architectural Group also will be honored for the Hmong College Prep Academy’s design.

Association News: AAMA releases standard lab test method for forces of operable windows and doors for accessibility

Method to demonstrate products’ operational capability

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has published AAMA 513-14, a document that sets a standard laboratory test method for windows and doors to ensure they are ADA-compliant. The document, titled Standard Laboratory Test Method for Determination of Forces and Motions Required to Activate Operable Parts of Operable Windows and Doors in Accessible Spaces, provides a consistent, repeatable method of laboratory testing the operating forces of operable windows and doors.
AAMA_ADA_istock_web
“[ANSI] ICC A117.1 [Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities] has long specified maximum allowable operating forces for products used in applications required to be accessible,” says Joe Hayden (Pella), chair of the ADA Test Methods for Hardware Task Group. “AAMA 513 will serve to augment A117.1 by providing a standardized test method for determining if products comply with these operating force requirements.”

The document, last published in 2012, was updated to include reference to not only CW and AW products throughout, but also R and LC products. It also was expanded to include all doors that are included within the scope of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440 (NAFS), not just sliding glass and terrace doors.

Hayden added that the next steps will involve getting the document incorporated into code.

“Now that AAMA 513 is complete, our next task will be to work with the A117.1 committee to properly reference AAMA 513 in A117.1,” Hayden says.

AAMA 513, along with other AAMA documents, may be purchased from AAMA’s Publication store.

Client News: Tru Vue Optium Acrylic Glazing enhances the viewer’s experience for Wynn Bullock’s photographic prints on display at the High

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta will be the first major art museum in nearly 40 years to mount a retrospective of work by photographer Wynn Bullock (1902-1975). The High’s Keough Family Curator of Photography and Head of Collections, Brett Abbott, organized the exhibition in collaboration with the Center for Creative Photography. Opened June 14, the exhibition features more than 100 black-and-white and color photographs displayed with Tru Vue® Optium® Acrylic Glazing, including a number of works on display for the first time.

Wynn Bullock: Revelations” offers an unprecedentedly complete look at Bullock’s innovative career, beginning with his early light abstractions and moving through his landscapes, figure studies, color work, negative images and late abstractions. A fully illustrated catalogue published under the same title by the High and the University of Texas Press will accompany the exhibition.

One of the most significant photographers of the mid-20th century, Bullock worked in the American modernist tradition alongside Edward Weston, Harry Callahan and Ansel Adams. Like his esteemed colleagues, Bullock was a master printmaker whose attention to detail resulted in photographic objects of astounding beauty. “For Bullock, the craftsmanship behind his work was just as important as its conceptual underpinnings,” emphasizes Abbott. “His work is marked by a delicacy and intricacy in printing that was so critical to mid-20th century modernist photography. With reflective glazing, it’s hard to appreciate the rich, velvety tones of Bullock’s prints. We really needed a framing system that would allow viewers to experience his work in an intimate and powerfully immediate way, otherwise we would not have done justice to his work.”

Tru Vue Optium Acrylic Glazing is relied upon by museums worldwide including those in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, as well as throughout the United States. “Tru Vue has worked closely with the museum community to develop this product to meet superior aesthetic and conservation standards,” says Julie Heath, Tru Vue’s museum liaison. “Optium combines the best of both worlds: glass and acrylic. It is a shatter-resistant, abrasion-resistant, anti-static, anti-reflective material that blocks up to 99 percent of damaging UV light. The anti-reflective coating of Optium erases the boundary between the artwork and the viewer.”

Photo courtesy of the High Museum of Art

Photo courtesy of the High Museum of Art

Abbott agrees and continues, “Most framing glass presents a barrier that captures reflections and interrupts the intended experience of a work of art. And in the case of Bullock, you really lose some of what’s special about his prints when you see yourself mirrored in the glazing. Optium takes that sense of mediation away, making the art itself primary to the viewing experience. We really wanted Bullock’s work to have an opportunity to sing on our walls, and Optium has made all the difference in helping us reach that goal.”

Along with Optium, all 108 prints are displayed with a simple, warm white matt and black wood frame. The High’s curatorial team framed two-thirds of the exhibit’s artworks, and the Center for Creative Photography’s team framed the remaining third. “It went very smoothly. The Optium glazing is wonderful to work with,” says Abbott. “And we love working with Tru Vue’s staff.”

“Wynn Bullock: Revelations” coincides with a major gift to the High from the Bullock Estate of a large collection of vintage photographs, making the High one of the most significant repositories of Bullock’s work in the country.
